The Islands of Tahiti

Island Life – with French Flavour

Known for their beauty, these 118 South Pacific islands are formed from five archipelagos, located in an ocean about the size of Europe.  French influence is evident everywhere, from the language to the architecture, dining and shopping experiences.  The climate is sunny and pleasant – most of the rain falls during the warmer and more humid season from November through to March, while the cooler and drier season is from April until October.

Our holiday options include the mountainous, tropical Society Islands of Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Taha’a, Vahine and Huahine; the atolls of Tikehau, Rangiroa and Fakarava in the Tuamotu Islands; and there are some wonderful cruising options. For the best stay, we recommend spending two to four days in each of several islands.

The Canterbury region also incorporates the delightful alpine spa resort of Hanmer Springs; the quaint French inspired seaside village of Akaroa on Banks Peninsula; Timaru with its heritage architecture and stunning views over Caroline Bay; the turquoise gemstone hue of Lake Tekapo and the clearest starry skies and highest mountains at the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park; the high-country area and ski fields near Methven and the alpine region in the Arthur’s Pass National Park.

Getting About in the Islands of Tahiti

Air Tahiti
Air Tahiti’s extensive schedule operates regular flights between 47 islands and atolls out of Tahiti, with a fleet of Twin-engine, turbo-prop aircraft.  The domestic terminal for Air Tahiti is located inside Faa’a International Airport in Papeete.

Ferry to Moorea
Regular ferry boats cross between Tahiti and Moorea daily, with a crossing time of 30-45 minutes (depending on the ferry).  This crossing offers splendid views of the lagoons and coastlines of Tahiti and Moorea.

Society Islands

The Society Islands Archipelago is a group of high, tropical islands surrounded by lagoons, separated into two groups: the Windward Islands, where we feature Tahiti, Moorea and the atoll of Tetiaroa, and the Leeward Islands, where we feature Bora Bora, Huahine, Raiatea, and Tahaa.
