The 92km sea journey between the North and South Islands is one of the world’s great short scenic cruises. Sailing by Interislander service, you travel between the capital city, Wellington and the port of Picton in just over three hours passing the rugged coastline at the entrance to Wellington Harbour, crossing the frequently quite rough waters of Cook Strait and cruising through the lovely islands and bays of the Marlborough Sounds.
You can take your car or motorhome on board Interislander, or you can travel as a foot passenger.

Express Return (available if you have selected the Maui premium package) – to help you get away with a minimum of fuss once you have returned your camper, you can simply drop off all sets of keys at the return desk (during opening hours is preferable).

Budget operates a modern, well maintained fleet of passenger cars, four wheel drives and mini vans from over 240 locations, including outlets at all major cities and provincial locations and service counters in-terminal at every major airport. Most of the fleet is leased for a twelve month period, with new vehicles replacing vehicles at the end of their lease on a month by month basis. Each is presented clean after a 20 point safety check before rental. If your hotel is within 15 km of a Budget depot they will deliver your vehicle free of charge between the hours of 8.30 am and 4.30 pm Monday to Friday (restrictions apply).
Budget Features
- unlimited km for all vehicle groups, except PVAR, SCAR & PFAR
- 200 km per day for group PVAR (excess km AU$0.27) and groups SCAR & PFAR (excess km AU$0.22)
- vehicle insurance, including single vehicle accidents and third party liability, is included (subject to an excess). Insurance may be void if vehicles are driven in restricted areas without prior consent from Budget
- a pre-authorisation of AU$330 is taken at the commencement of rental as a bond and is held until the vehicle is returned undamaged and with a full tank at the agreed location
- minimum age for rental is 21 years (25 years for 4WD’s), no maximum age. All drivers must hold a valid full licence
- all rates are quoted on a 24 hour period
- one way rentals are available (conditions apply)
- multi-hire rental rates are available (conditions apply)
- Vehicle Registration Recovery Fee is included
- Airport Concession Recovery Fee is included. Lower rates apply if collecting vehicle off airport
- detailed road maps of cities are available free of charge upon vehicle collection
