Waikato
Natural Miracles & Middle-Earth Magic
Situated right in the heart of the North Island, the Waikato shares its name with New Zealand’s longest river. A region of lush, green hills, bush and farmland, it also has exceptional surf on the West coast at Raglan. Its main city, Hamilton, is located 90 minutes from Auckland and Rotorua, and Cambridge, the hub of the thoroughbred horse-breeding industry is just 15 minutes away.
Famous for being the backdrop for Middle-Earth movie magic, the Waikato is also a place where natural miracles occur: over time, water and limestone together have formed vast cave systems – populated by glow-worms – huge sink holes, and underground streams.
